Medieval Journal - Individual Project

This project will challenge you to use your research skills, imagination, and creativity as you pretend you are a person from the Middle Ages.

Create a medieval person. You will develop this person's personality, his name, and identity. You will decide on his occupation (knight, priest, serf etc...) You will describe his daily life, including the ups and downs. You must create a family for yourself as well. You will make a Coat of Arms or Family Crest. You must provide background information, that is based in historical truth. You need to discuss where you live and the time period. Certainly you will need to include any hardships you had to endure.

This project is to be written in the first person. In other words, you must become the character you are writing about, You must write this in the form of a journal or diary. You must have ten entries (1 paragraph each). Each entry must be dated, either daily, once a week, or one a month. Each entry must be at least 3 pages total typed. (double spaced, 10 to 12 font size)

Remember, although your character is fictional you must base his life in historical truths. Therefore, you must do research. Links to web cites on the Middle Ages can be found below. (Due 10-12-05)

January.

My name is Catherine Darcy. I live in a farming village in England. My village is at a crossroad of two major cathedral cities.
In prior months we have taken the last plough and are now mending and making new tools and fences for the new farming season. Life is hard and my back hurts a lot, but I can not complain when we have so much to do before March. Life is hard, but it is the only life I know.
Our lord is becoming impatient for our taxes and will not allow us to forget our oaths, but it is difficult for my family to farm all day and then pay taxes, rent, and tithe. We will make it, we have no choice, and this is survival.

January.

My family may go through hard times, especially when it comes to making an entirely new fence, but we do have fun. My father’s name is William, my mother’s name is Rebecca and my older brother’s name is John. I am the youngest in the family.
Lately, the church is demanding that people go and work on church land. We all have to work for free on church land. This is greatly inconvenient as the time could have been used to work on our own land. However, the church is powerful, so no one dares to disobey the church. I along with everyone else have been taught from a very early age that God would see their sins, including disobeying church leaders, and punishing them.

February.

February is the time in the farming year when we cart manure and marl. The entire village is beginning to reek; manure is not the best of smells and that on top of the animals and waste from people makes this an odorous time of the year. The smell of our village is the least of or worries however, March is approaching and we haven’t had much rain. We need the rain so that the ground is fertile and soft when we begin to plough in the upcoming March. We keep praying for rain, we got a little bit last night, but it is not enough. If it doesn’t rain soon we will be in for a hard year.

February.

February is coming to an end. I have grown accustomed to the smell, but I an unsure if that is a good thing. Our prayers were answered when it rained for nearly a week. The ground should be nice for March now. Our house’s thatch roof formed a leak due to the downpour of rain, luckily John had no trouble in repairing it this afternoon. The church is in good shape now, too, I guess the work we put in was not a total waste. I am not looking forward to March, however, but it is quickly approaching.

March.

I spent the entire day today ploughing the fields and spreading manure. Above that, it was my day to take the bucket of waste to the river and it was disgusting. Today was simply not the best of days.
My father was a little skeptic today when some large clouds gathered overhead, but luckily they brought no rain. As much as we want rain in February, in March we need it to be dry, and if we are lucky with no frost.

March.

Today was a sad day. A girl who is about my age and works for another lord in out village became ill. She seemed like such a good girl, but now she is sick. She does not feel well and can not get out of bed without becoming dizzy and weak, I do not know what she must have done to upset God so much. It does not seem likely, but I am not one to question what the church teaches. Therefore, if she is sick it is because God is punishing her.

April.

I like the month of April. It is one of my favorite months of the year. Although it brings a lot of work just like every other month in the year, the weather is nice. A little sunshine and a little rainfall, and the best part is that is the kind of weather we need this month. It has been a good month. Since the weather was good to us last month March went on smoothly and we were well prepared for April’s work.

April.

It is hard work sowing the seeds and harrowing. I’m not going to pretend that I am not sore and that I do not feel weak. My body is so tired and I feel as if I could snap in half at any given moment. I do not know how my father and mother have lasted so long. I know that I can not stop or slow down my work, my family counts on me to do my portion of the work and I will not disappoint my family. Family is everything to me and they are the people I spend all of my time with, I don’t even have time to spend with other people and if I do I use that time to rest my aching body. I do not mind my life, it is all I know and I am happy with it.
